Barkley Dam Historical Photos

We can’t get enough of historical photos, especially those that show such drastic change.  Recently we found these photos on the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Flickr album.  We selected three of our favorites, but you can see the entire album on their Flickr.

Officials dedicated Barkley Dam, which created Lake Barkley, was in August 1966.  Construction began in 1959 on the dam, located near Grand Rivers on the Cumberland River.  With the creation of Kentucky Lake 20 years prior, a new canal was built linking the two lakes.  Also, the creation of Lake Barkley created a large peninsula, which became Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.
